Last Saturday, State Senator David W. Marsden (D, VA-37) hosted a Town Hall at the Chantilly public library. Though he is a Democrat and a proponent of Medicaid expansion in Virginia, he encouraged those opposed to Medicaid expansion to attend and voice their views.
40+ citizens attended the 10 AM–noon town hall. Senator Marsden seemed a bit surprised by the large turnout. One of the first questions raised the issue of decoupling Medicaid expansion from state budget negotiations. Senator Marsden responded, “We can, but it would present a problem because expansion dramatically affects the budget.” He stated Medicaid expansion involves costs and decisions on what to do with Federal money so it’s easier and cleaner to do it all at one time.
